Village Gardens’ Farmers Market Returns For Second Season

Date: Every Thursday, July 10 through August 28, 2014

Time: 3 – 7 pm

Location: 4632 N. Trenton, Portland, OR 97203

The Village Gardens’ Farmer Market is returning for the summer to offer organic produce grown by local families and Food Works Farm youth. Kicking off July 10, the market will be held every Thursday through August 28 from 3 to 7 pm outside the Village Market store in North Portland.

In addition to the certified organic produce from Food Works Farm, the market will feature seasonal and cultural vegetables grown by Village Gardens Market Gardeners. The Market Gardeners hail from Congo, Burundi and Mexico and will offer a wide variety of unique vegetables such as amaranth leaf, squash leaf, bean leaf, African eggplant, chili pepper, tomatillos and squash blossoms.

Prepared Food Vendors representing the culturally diverse neighborhoods of New Columbia and Portsmouth will be on site providing cuisine from Ethiopia and Mexico. Enjoy some injera with lentils or tamales with aqua fresca while you shop for produce and support your community.

See you on Thursday!

Eighth Grader Organizes Race For Janus Youth

When 14-year-old Bella told her mother she wanted to organize her own “Family Fun Run” to benefit Janus Youth Programs, her mom thought, “Why don’t you just run in a race instead?” But Bella had a vision and a strong drive to organize the event herself, which she did on May 20th at the Wilson High School track. Every detail of the event—from garnering donations for swag items, applying for a grant to help offset costs, organizing a bake sale, to publicity—Bella planned with support from family and friends. The event was a big success and raised close to $1,000 for Janus.
