Village Gardens Announces New, Seasonal Farmers Market

Join us this summer as we kick off the new Village Gardens Farmers Market held Thursdays from 3 to 7 pm in the New Columbia community of North Portland. Beginning Thursday, July 25 and lasting 6 weeks until August 29, this seasonal farmers market will feature nearly a dozen local vendors including the amazing produce grown by Food Works Farm youth and meat, fruit, bread and traditional Mexican and Ethiopian food vendors.

New to Village Gardens in 2013 are Market Gardeners – five families who grow culturally appropriate vegetables to sell at the Village Gardens Farmers Market. Thanks to the generosity of a Sauvie Island land owner who donated a ¼ acre of land, these gardeners will be selling their new squash leaves, squash blossom, bean leaves, green tomatoes and much more.

The market will be held outside the Village Market Grocery Store located at 4632 N Trenton and also feature live music and craft tables. Eligible vendors will be accepting WIC vouchers, WIC senior checks and FDNP checks. The market will provide tokens in exchange for EBT cash for SNAP users.

This new farmers market hopes to not only benefit the local community by providing local, affordable and healthy foods, but also provide local community vendors with supplemental income and business experience. Visit VillageGardens.org for more details and please come join us on Thursday nights!

Eighth Grader Organizes Race For Janus Youth

When 14-year-old Bella told her mother she wanted to organize her own “Family Fun Run” to benefit Janus Youth Programs, her mom thought, “Why don’t you just run in a race instead?” But Bella had a vision and a strong drive to organize the event herself, which she did on May 20th at the Wilson High School track. Every detail of the event—from garnering donations for swag items, applying for a grant to help offset costs, organizing a bake sale, to publicity—Bella planned with support from family and friends. The event was a big success and raised close to $1,000 for Janus.
