Downtown Clean & Safe District Donates $30,000 to Yellow Brick Road

The Downtown Clean & Safe board of directors has provided $30,000 to Yellow Brick Road, our homeless youth street outreach program, for critical cold weather supplies and our professional outreach workers who walk the streets of downtown Portland every night bringing information, referrals and crisis intervention directly to youth experiencing homelessness.

Clean & Safe Board members learned about a lapse in the program’s federal funding at a Portland City Council work session and that same day, the idea to provide one-time funding to bridge the gap was proposed and unanimously approved.

“Janus has been highly effective in offering critical first steps for kids to get back on track,” said Ty Barker, general manager of Unico Properties and chair of the Downtown Clean & Safe board of directors. “This past summer, the Janus staff developed a strong partnership with the Portland Police Bureau walking beat officers, enhancing our ability to work with these youth, develop trust and ultimately get them off the streets and into safer environments.”

Downtown’s Clean & Safe District was created more than 20 years ago to support additional cleaning and security in the central city. The district, funded by downtown property owners, includes 213 blocks in the central city, and also supports market research and retail recruitment and retention efforts. The district is managed by the Portland Business Alliance under the direction of the district’s board of directors. We thank them for their generous support!

Eighth Grader Organizes Race For Janus Youth

When 14-year-old Bella told her mother she wanted to organize her own “Family Fun Run” to benefit Janus Youth Programs, her mom thought, “Why don’t you just run in a race instead?” But Bella had a vision and a strong drive to organize the event herself, which she did on May 20th at the Wilson High School track. Every detail of the event—from garnering donations for swag items, applying for a grant to help offset costs, organizing a bake sale, to publicity—Bella planned with support from family and friends. The event was a big success and raised close to $1,000 for Janus.
