Poem by Hope Partnership Youth, Noah Schultz

Reach Farther

To my friends who reach farther than the rule book suggests I commend you
You have chosen to laugh off no’s and let your desires grow
Knowledge over everything is the drum beating to your life’s direction
Placing you in a state of perpetual development
Others opinions on your dreams fall short because they’re irrelevant
You my friend have found purpose

Changes Apartment Assistance Helps Homeless Youth With Housing

Anyone living in the Portland metropolitan area knows that affordable housing is one of the biggest problems facing the city and its residents. For homeless youth, this is a huge issue. The cost of housing is so high that often the only affordable housing is far away from other services that many of them need. This is where Changes Apartment Assistance—our independent living apartment placement program for 16-20 year olds—steps in. Designed to assist youth in overcoming the final barriers to complete independence, Changes’ staff work collaboratively on housing searches with eligible youth. Over the past four years, 57 youth obtained housing thanks to Changes.

Celebrating 20 Years with Janus

When Candy Lowe started her first job for Janus at Oak Bridge Youth Shelter in Washington 20 years ago, she had no idea that it was the beginning of a long term career. She also didn’t know how much she would like working with youth and that she had a talent for it. When you meet Candy, it isn’t hard to see why. She has a big, friendly smile that would make anyone feel safe and welcome.

A Message from Janus’ Executive Director, Dennis Morrow, on the Orlando Tragedy

Like all of you, I have been profoundly and personally impacted by the tragedy in Orlando. It attacks at a visceral level everything that we at Janus believe in and support—for our youth, for our staff, and for our Board as well as for our own family and friends. We have been preparing for participation in Portland’s Gay Pride Parade event with many youth and staff from our different programs taking buttons that proudly identify them as being from Janus and of supporting PRIDE for all. It is hard to fathom the level of hatred that exists among humans—especially when the target of that hatred is so many of our youth…every night Janus provides safety off the streets for nearly 100 youth and 30-40% of them identify as LGBTQ. And the age of those murdered represent both the ages of our youth…and many of our staff.
