With Support Comes A New Life

For most of his life, 18 year old Adam Ramey didn’t like adults. Growing up in a family where he experienced domestic violence, he never had anyone that he could depend on. After brief stays at a shelter and a foster home, at age 13 he arrived at Cordero—one of our residential services—a scared, angry teen who pushed people away. Having felt betrayed and abandoned for years, Adam remained angry and aloof. The Cordero staff kept trying to communicate with him saying, “we’re here for you.” Says Adam, “first I thought that was ridiculous, you don’t even know me. But there was one person who persisted and I believed her sincerity and began opening up. Thanks to the Cordero staff, I was able to become the person I am today. They helped keep me sane.” It took a few months, but gradually Adam realized that there really were people who cared for him. He soon developed close relationships with staff and peers.

Board of Director Spotlight: Tom Fink Receives 2016 Simon Benson Award

For Janus Board member, Tom Fink, philanthropy is about more than just donating time or money. For him, it is about making a difference in his community. One of Tom’s favorite quotes is by Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” This is a concept that Tom has embraced. “I feel like I have been blessed and I want to give back. There could have been so many things that might have derailed my life. But I was lucky enough to have missed those obstacles and want to help others less fortunate,” says Tom. His tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed. On November 3, in recognition of his contributions, Portland State University (PSU) and the PSU Foundation presented Tom with a Simon Benson Award at their gala dinner.

Insights Promotes Healthy Relationships for Young Moms

Intimate Partner Violence. It is not a phrase that some of us know, yet many of our youth are at high risk for experiencing it in their lives. Insights Teen Parent Services—one of Janus’ Programs—supports young moms who have or are currently experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV). Says Heather Baeckel, Insights Program Supervisor, “Warning signs can look different for young parents. They often describe their intimate relationships differently than adults. Our staff are trained in recognizing the signs of IPV and know how to respond to young moms on topics of healthy, safe relationships. Each mom is assigned a Home Visiting staff who provides them with individualized, strengths-based services.”

Poem by Adam Ramey

Once upon a time, in a land far away

There was a village of compassionate people who gave a troubled little seed a place to grow and stay.

At once, the seed who didn’t know what to say

Became angry and sad, so he pushed people away.

“Stay away” he cried.

“I am a monster, a monster. No one can help me, for many have tried.”

But the village of people never once swayed nor fret

For they wished to instill in him values in which they had set.

How Janus Changed Ashlee’s Life

Ashlee came to Janus Youth Programs as a homeless 17-year-old when her step-father told her that she had to leave the cramped house where she lived with her mother, siblings and grandmother in Portland. Her journey after leaving her family was not easy. She couch surfed, lived on the streets and under bridges, was addicted to drugs and alcohol and abused by boyfriends. Despite setbacks and obstacles, Ashlee was determined to change the course of her life. Now at age 22, she and her two-year old son, Dubhlainn, live together in an apartment where she is creating a more stable future for both of them.
